Radiohead - The King of Limbs

Well a Radiohead album release it’s always an exciting moment for me. I’m a huge fan of the Oxford based band and their first albums (The Bends, Ok computer) largely contributed to my desire to form a rock band and write my own songs.

 “I wanna be in a band when I get to heaven

When Kid A and Amnesiac were released the band gained a new status as avant garde musicians who weren’t afraid to explore distant musical landscapes regardless of the success of their previous “rock” albums. The result was amazing, innovative and exiting.
Hail to the Thief was the link between Kid A and Ok computer, a great mix of electronica and killing guitars riffs, with memorable songs like 2+2+5 and There There.
In Rainbows was a pretty album with beautiful soundscapes and melodies but the actual album release business model was much more innovative than the music.

The King of Limbs: Sunday morning (2pm), sitting in my kitchen with a cup of tea and a pint of Alka Seltzer in each hand… bring it on. Found this a great video on you tube where you can listen to the full album:

Might have been the hangover but the first listen wasn’t easy. Is it because we always expect too much from the bands we love?

You can hear the Tom York influence over this album (yeah; he’s the lead singer daa!) but seriously it does sound a lot like an improved version of the Eraser. I do miss Johnny Greenwood’s blissfully tortured electric guitars but that’s just me and musicians evolve.

Second, Third listen, a fried egg and a cigarette later things make a little more sense.
The texture, arrangements are beautiful and delicate and two tracks really stand out of the pack:

The electro rock spaghetti western vibe of the song is quite similar to Go to Sleep on Hail to the Thief  but it’s a really cool song. Laid back and sexy.

The other song I really dig is Separator:

The song takes a few minutes to kick in but when the delicate subtle lead guitar starts the pieces of the puzzle come together. It’s got a little Indian electro vibe to it, very chilled out and appeasing.

I’m not going to go through all the songs but the two previously mentioned ones are really worth it. I hear a lot of recycling on the record:   Codex =  Pyramid Song (Amnesiac) , Little by Little = go to Sleep (Hail to the Thief), Morning Mr. Magpie =  a Prozac(ed) version of Bodysnatchers( In Rainbows) ,…

I still love the band and respect their work. We can’t expect to be blown away with every new album. Bands change as people change.

The king of Limbs isn’t a great album but Radiohead is still a massive band and I can’t wait to see them live is Paris!

Songs that make me weak at the knees.

Just like a women - Bob Dylan

“She takes just like a woman, yes, she does

Great tunes from one of Dylan’s best album: Blonde on Blonde. This was Dylan’s first album backed by an electric band. Some overwhelmed early folk Dylan fans booed him during his 66 UK tour and branded him as a “traitor to Folk”. It turned out to be a blueprint for hundreds of singer-songwriters.

Wild Horses – The Rolling Stones

A beautiful melodic lullaby written by Richards & Jagger. The lyrics were
apparently re-written by Mick for Marian Faithfull when she was slipping down the rabbit hole. The lyrics “Wild horses couldn't drag me away “were supposedly the words uttered by Marian when she awoke from a drug related coma in 1969.

Je t’aime… moi non plus – Serge Gainsbourg

“- Je t’aime je t’aime

Oh oui je t’aime
- Moi non plus
- Oh mon amour
- Comme la vague irrésolue
Je vais, je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins
Je vais et je viens
Entre tes reins Et je me retiens”

This sexually explicit song was written by Gainsbourg for Brigit Bardot in 1967, the French icon sang on the original version but refused to release the track because she was married at the time and wanted to keep her love affair with Serge secret. The song was rerecorded with Jane Birkin in 1968.

I Got You Babe – Sonny and Cher

“They say our love won't pay the rent
Before it's earned our money's all been spent
I guess that's so we don't have a plot
But at least I'm sure of all the things we got... babe
I got you babe, I got you babe”

Memorable song that gained a second life after being featured in 90s classic film Groundhog Day. Sony and Cher formed a prolific duo during the 60’s and 70, they even had a TV show on CBS in the 70. Sonny abandoned his musical career to go into politics and Cher, well Cher is the aging diva that she is.

Wish you were here – Pink Floyd

Wish you were here was written for Sid Barrett in 1975. For optimised listening you have to be in a long distance relationships with a half empty bottle of red wine in your hand.

I want you (she’s so heavy) – The Beatles

“I want you

She’s so heavy heavy, heavy, heavy”

Lennon wrote this hypnotic song for Yoko Ono in 1969. It was apparently influenced by a one worded poem wrote by Ono in 64 called “eau”. I want you only has 14 words in it.

Felling Down? You’re not the only on. It’s Blue Monday!

Well, Christmas is long gone now and you realise that your New Years Eve resolutions have already been shattered into pieces as you stare at your table and see dozens of colorful wraps that inevitability came from that open box of assorted chocolate you bought from the local supermarket yesterday.

Your banker keeps leaving messages on your answer phone asking you to call him back. You’re fat (let’s be honest) and last but not least you are starting to forget what the sun looks like.

You are not the only one feeling blue in January. A study made by Cliff Arnall a former part-time tutor at the University of Cardiff claims that a combination of weather conditions, debt level, time since failing our new year’s resolutions, low motivational levels and feeling of a need to take action all contribute to what is known as the “January blues” which reaches its peak on the on the monday of the last full week of January known as “Blue Monday”.

But feeling down is not unavoidable and you can channel your will to take action by renewing or changing certain aspects of your life.

There are several ways to fight your little weight problem for example:

You could fly to Rio de Janeiro get a liposuction and drink martinis on the beach with your surgeon.  (On second thought the banker will not be too happy about that).

More seriously though a healthy diet and some daily exercise will see off those love handles in no time and for those of you who are allergic to hardcore abdominals and push-ups you can try an easier and more interactive way to work-out with the hugely popular game from Nintendo Wii Sport resort.

For the lack of daylight you could try light therapy or alternatively fill your living room with sand, turn your heating to the max and watch Miami Vice in your undies with a chilled tomato & celery cocktail.

And finally for your money problems apart from getting a better paid job you could sell your stuff on the internet and get cash for all the things you need to start off on a better and healthier basis.

To conclude, nothing lasts forever and we all have what it takes inside of us to make that step and start improving our way of living. Well at least for a few weeks ; )
